Alberta M. Dowty, age 96, of Brighton, and formerly of Sturgis passed away peacefully late Friday afternoon, Jan. 17, 2014, at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born Nov. 12, 1917, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Bert and Isabell (Porter) Parker, longtime First Presbyterian Church members.
Mrs. Dowty resided nearly her entire life in Sturgis, moving to Brighton four years ago to be closer to her daughter.
On Oct. 6, 1940, she married Glenn A. Dowty at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. Glenn and Alberta were married 69 years when Mr. Dowty died Nov. 21, 2009.
Mrs. Dowty was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She had been employed by Freeman Manufacturing and worked as a playground supervisor at Wall School.
Mrs. Dowty was an active lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. She enjoyed playing cards and was and belonged to a couple’s card group for many years and the Girls Club. She enjoyed cooking, reading and loved time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Ann (Joseph) Monroe of Brighton and Sandra Lee (Harvey) Wilson of Presque Isle; five grandchildren, Michael Monroe, Jane Donovan, Rick Monroe, Harvey M. Wilson and Nancy Wilson; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Grant Oliver Parker of Perry; a sister-in-law, Mary Jeanne Dowty of Schoolcraft; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three sisters, Marguerite Sager, Nancy Wolgamood and Wilma Brandenburg.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Alberta M. Dowty will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Michael Wicks will officiate. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
