Award ceremony for Thomasma

A Sturgis-area native will be honored by Sturgis Exchange Club when it conducts its 71st annual Book of Golden Deeds award ceremony Thursday at Sturges-Young Auditorium.

Elsa Thomasma, 23, was selected for the award in recognition of her volunteer efforts in raising funds and building what is known as “Project Ark” in Cangumbang, Philippines.

The community center was used as an evacuation center during the December typhoon that ravaged parts of the country. Because of it, no lives in the village were lost.

The award is the highest recognition given the Exchange Club. It recognized the contributions made by a person or persons to their country, community or fellowman.

The ceremony takes at 11:45 a. m. Thursday and is open to the public with a buffet lunch offered for $ 8 per person.

Reservations should be made by Tuesday and can be done by phoning call 651- 8541.
