Donald H. Smith, age 76, of Colon, passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at his home.
Don was born March 6, 1937, in Garrett, Ind., a son of the late Earl B. and Opal L. (Terhune) Smith.
His early years were spent in Aurora, Ill., graduating from Moose Hart with the class of 1955. He then served in the U.S. Air Force. After his service in the Air Force, he made his home in Colon.
Don was a self-employed groundskeeper. He enjoyed the outdoors, mushrooming and fishing and loved his animals.
He is survived by his soulmate, Linda Sites of Colon; two sisters, Helen Charlebois of Fallston, Md., and Dorothy Fitzgerald of Sherborn Mass.; a sister-in law, Pat Smith of Colon; Linda’s children, Penny (Roger) Frailey of Coldwater and Laurie (Cary) Irland of Sturgis and their children, Ryan, Autum, Kristopher (Tiffany), Kelsey (Kyle), Brittanee, Brayden, Tyler and Tanna; several nieces, nephews and cousins; special cousin Shirley Evert; and his loyal dog, Abby.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marian Broker; and two brothers, Marvin and Howard Smith.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service and burial of ashes will take place at a later date at Lakeside Cemetery in Colon. If desired, the family suggest memorials be made to either the family or Sturgis Hospice. Envelopes are available at Schipper Funeral Home in Colon.
