The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency is offering free radon test kits to residents in its district.
Rebecca Burns, environmental health director, said the offer is in conjunction with January being National Radon Action Month.
She said radon has no taste or odor, and is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in soil and rock. Its vapors can seep through cracks and leaks and, if inhaled over an extended period of time, can cause lung cancer.
Burns said the three counties fall into a nine-county region containing the highest levels of radon in the state.
Kits are available at the agency’s offices in Hillsdale, Coldwater and Three Rivers, while supplies last.
