Relocation of historic building

The Newell A. and Grace A. Franks Fund, held by the Sturgis Area Community Foundation, is leading the way for the facelift and relocation of Sturgis’ historic depot building later this year.

Working with the Sturgis Historical Society, Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce and the city of Sturgis, the Newell and Grace Franks Fund is offering grant funds for the move and repair of the depot building, the purchase of downtown property for the depot’s new home and a new Chamber of Commerce building.

Officials involved in the matter said the project has been under discussion for several years in hopes of providing new exposure to the historic, 1880s-era depot and the Sturgis Historical Society Museum.

The depot will be located at 400 W. Chicago Road, at the corner of South Jefferson Street.

Following the move and repair work, the city will continue to own and maintain the property.
