Sydney E. (Sid) Hagerty, 86, of Union, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Cass County Medical Care Facility, following an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 6, 1927, in White Pigeon, a child of Harley and Lillian (Lamb) VanAntwerp. He was a graduate of Scott High School and Tri-State University and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
He retired from Bendix Company of South Bend, Ind., as a mechanical engineer. He was a past member of the Porter Township Zoning Board and a member of the Bendix salaried retirees club. He enjoyed woodworking and repairing items. He had been a resident of Union, White Pigeon and Scott, Ind., area all his life.
On July 24, 1946, he married Pauline R. Custer in White Pigeon. She preceded him in death Aug. 27, 2005. He also was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Jacquelyn Hagerty of Union; a brother, Jack (Mary) VanAntwerp of Howe, Ind.; a sister, Eva Ann (Alan) Snyder of Constantine; extended family Pat and Patti Culp of Sturgis, Julie and Jack Senger and their children, Jamie, Jarrett and Jenna Senger of Millersburg, Ind., and Judy and Bob Binder of Union.
Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Scott Manning of White Pigeon United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will take place in White Pigeon Township Cemetery.
