By a two-to-one margin, Mendon Community Schools voters approved a 1-mill increase request Tuesday. Unofficial results from the county clerk’s office show a tally of 314 in favor of the $9.3 million request versus 160 voters opposed. Board of education president Roger Cupp, Superintendent Rob Kuhlman and Mendon Pride Committee chairman Jim Fassett were unanimous in saying the district’s voters sent a clear message that they continue their support of the 636-student district. The district plans to target improvement in the areas of security, transportation, building needs and technology. Cupp said the highest priority will be fixing the plumbing and water-line infrastructure at Mendon Elementary this summer. The mill increase also will fund demolition of the Mendon Heritage School House. Cupp said the task will take place either this summer or in 2015. Kuhlman said the funds will be used in three phases over an eight-year period: $4.2 million in 2014, $3.3 million in 2018 and nearly $1.9 million in 2022.
