Certificates of Excellence

The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency’s Board of Health has released its “Certificates of Excellence” in food service for the year 2013.

The 97 recipients in the three-county region represent food establishments that were able to meet stringent criteria during the year.

The 32 St. Joseph County locations that received Certificates of Excellence included schools in Burr Oak, Centreville, Colon, Constantine, Sturgis, Three Rivers and White Pigeon.

Restaurants that received Certificates of Excellence were Mama Mia’s Pizza in Burr Oak; Harvey House and Piper’s Grinders Galore in Constantine; and Jimi Jo’s Ice Cream, Mike’s Pizza and Subs, Piper’s Grinders Galore and Wal-Mart Subway in Sturgis.

Certificates are awarded only if the facility has had no Priority or Priority foundation items, and no more than three core items cited during their onsite inspection.

According to Rebecca Burns, environment health director, priority items and priority foundation items are essential items that, if found to be in violation, could result in

foodborne illnesses.

Core items are non-priority or priority foundation items that relate to general sanitation and/or maintenance.
