Man dies from gunshot wound

A 33-year-old Burr Oak man died from a gunshot wound during a domestic dispute around 10:30 p.m. in Burr Oak Township.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department said Dennis Brooks died from a gunshot wound to the head at Townline Road, near Farrand Road, on the border of Burr Oak and Colon townships. Investigators said Maria Audrey-Louise Williams, 34, is accused in the fatal shooting. St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough said Williams, a Burr Oak resident, has been charged with one count each of open murder and felony firearms.

Members of the St. Joseph County Major Crimes Task Force were called to the scene of the incident. Investigators said Williams left Brooks’ body by the side of the road. She went to a home in the 100 block of Fifth Street in Burr Oak and called 911 to report the incident, investigators said.

Williams is at the St. Joseph County Jail, where bond has been set at $1 million.
