McNeil wins Liberty Bell award

District Court Judge Jeff Middleton has announced that Jim McNeil is the recipient of the 30th St. Joseph County Bar Association’s Liberty Bell award.

McNeil has been a law-enforcement instructor at Glen Oaks Community College for 36 years. He will be retiring in May. Middleton said McNeil has has taught the Introduction to Law Enforcement class to hundreds of students, many of whom now serve as St. Joseph County law enforcement officers.

McNeil previously was employed by the Sturgis Police Department from 1976 to May 2002. During his time in Sturgis, McNeil served as a patrol officer, sergeant, and finally, 21 years as a detective/sergeant.

A presentation of the Liberty Bell Award by Middleton and Bar Association President Deborah Davis takes place at 9 a.m. Thursday in Middleton’s Courtroom C.
