Unemployment rate decreases

February’s unemployment rate in St. Joseph County decreased by one-tenth of a percent compared to a month earlier.

The monthly labor-market analysis by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget showed St. Joseph County’s 6.8 percent February unemployment rate was more than January’s 6.9 percent.

February’s unemployment rate was 1.3 percent less than the same month one year earlier, when the figure was 8.1 percent.

St. Joseph County remained below the state unemployment average, which was 8.5 percent in February.

The agency said job gains in manufacturing, and support staff in the education sector continuing to be recalled to work following Christmas break helped keep the February unemployment rate steady from the previous month.

At 6.5 percent, Kalamazoo County had the region’s lowest unemployment rate in February, while Van Buren County had the highest, with 10 percent.
