Update – Recycling event

Saturday’s recycling of household hazardous waste and electronics was most likely the largest ever in the nine-year history of the spring event.

Sponsored by the St. Joseph County Solid Waste Management Planning Committee, the collection drew almost 40,000 pounds of electronics, 715 tires, about 2,500 cans of paint, 14,000 pounds of hazardous waste and 80 appliances.

In all cases, the numbers were greater than the April 2013 collection, committee secretary Pat Kulikowski said.

She said the collection featured a long line of traffic during the four-hour event, which ran 20 minutes over the allotted time due to the number of vehicles still in line.

Another recycling collection will likely take place in early October, Kulikowski added.
