Arrests following Kazoo shooting death

Police in Kalamazoo now have three people in custody in connection with a shooting that left a 13-year old boy dead. Michael Day was found with a gunshot wound to his upper body Monday evening in Kalamazoo’s Edison neighborhood. He died later at a local hospital. Investigators believe the fatal shot came from a shotgun wielded by 15-year-old Victor Garay of Kalamazoo. He was arrested around midnight on Thursday and is charged with open murder and felony firearm. According to Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting, a preliminary examination on June 3 will determine if Garay will be charged as an adult or a juvenile. Authorities believe the shooting was the result of argument between two groups of people over the weekend, but don’t know if Day was the intended target. Police initially arrested an 18-year-old person-of-interest on unrelated charges but say their investigation revealed that three different men fired guns in the direction of the victim. A 23-year-old man was also arrested and a handgun was seized from his home. Day had recently been released from the hospital after having been shot a few months ago  (MRN)
