Centreville’s Future Farmers of America judging team successfully competed at the Michigan 4-H/FFA meat-judging contest at Michigan State University July 25.
The FFA team from Centreville placed first overall in the contest, earned a gold award and the right to represent Michigan at the National FFA Meat Evaluation competition in Louisville in October.
Members of the team were Clay Decker of Leonidas; Ty Cool of Mendon; Mackenzie Eling, of Colon; and Casey Clementz of Sherwood.
With the assistance of the Michigan Livestock Expo, participants were able to see the animals at the show and watch them win before viewing and evaluating them in the meat cooler.
As a collaborative effort between the MSU Meat Lab, MSU Extension, Michigan 4-H and Michigan FFA, youth competed in the contest that included three beef classes, three pork classes, identification of 20 retail cuts, yield and quality-grade three beef carcasses.
