Dozens of snapping turtles have hatched at an Ann Arbor-area veterinary hospital after their pregnant mother was found injured in a mall trash can. The Ann Arbor News reports 28 baby turtles were born this week after spending 75 days in an incubator at Emergency Veterinary Hospital Ann Arbor. A worker emptying trash cans discovered the 1- foot mother turtle in June. She was admitted to the clinic with a broken jaw and severe head injuries. Dr. Lindsay Ruland says she would have been euthanized but an X-ray showed she was pregnant with 51 eggs. Clinic staff induced labor twice to get her to lay all the eggs. She died in July of sepsis. Ruland is working with the state to release the baby turtles into the wild. (AP)
