River-trail master plan moves ahead

Officials from Berrien County-based Edgewater Resources were on hand Wednesday in Three Rivers to present an overview of a river-trail master plan and field input from the group of about 30 people in attendance.

County commission chair John Dobberteen made clear the intent of the proposed plan. He said any place in the county where a boat can float, the county commission wants that space open and available as an integrated parks system river trail.

He anticipates a timeframe of between three and five years for the trail system to be in place officially.

Many of the kayakers and canoeists in attendance said the most important features they look for in a potential launch site is parking and safe footing.

A second public-input meeting in Sturgis is tentatively set for Sept. 8.

The county board earlier this summer agreed to fund $89,000 for services provided by Edgewater for developing the master plan.
