Woman saved after choking

A Kalamazoo Public Safety officer has saved a choking woman after pulling her over for running a red light.  The department says Officer Jason Gates rescued the driver Saturday when he found her choking during a traffic stop. He saw she was having trouble breathing when he approached her vehicle.  The department says Gates asked the woman if she was OK and realized she couldn’t breathe. He hit her on the back to try to clear her airway. When that didn’t work, he removed her from her vehicle and did the Heimlich maneuver.  The action successfully dislodged a piece of sausage and bun from her throat.  The department says the woman started crying and thanked Gates for saving her life.  (AP)
