Leo Anthony Barcus (Barkauskas), Veteran of WWII, Marine Corps Master Sergeant died peacefully on Oct. 24, 2014.
Beloved Husband of the late Evelyn Barkauskas, nee Hjelmgren, and the late Marion Carr. Dear Father of Steven (Linda) Barton, Jeffrey Barkauskas, the late Sandra (Roger) Rempert and the late Mark (Crisler) Lovendahl. Step-Father of Shannon (David) Jaeger, Diane (Bill) Free and Katherine (Ray) Sawicki. Proud Grandfather of Mary Barton, Michael (Katherine) Barton, Stephanie Barkauskas, Lauren Barkauskas, Christel (Brad) Duba, Randal (Gail) Rempert, Victoria (John) Andre and Erich (Sue) Rempert, Alexander Lovendahl and William Lovendahl and Step-Grandfather to many. Great-Grandfather, Step-Great-Grandfather, Uncle and Great Uncle to many.
With great sadness we mourn the passing of another “greatest generation” hero. Leo graduated from Tilden Technical H.S., then in 1938 joined the Marine Corps because he felt it his duty in the conflict he saw coming. He served in the Pacific theatre, including the invasion of Okinawa, where the ship carrying his unit was destroyed by a kamikaze attack. He returned to civilian life in 1946 becoming a journeyman electrician with IBEW Local 134. In 1981 he retired to Three Rivers using his many trade skills to build a retirement home on the St. Joseph River. He and Marion spent over 30 years greatly enjoying their retirement home and family visits. He never forgot the servicemen and women who did not return safely home.
