About a dozen homes in Sherman Township were evacuated late Sunday after a thousand-gallon propane tank began to leak.
Authorities said the tank slid off of its base due to soft ground and rolled down a hill around 9:30 p.m.
The tank then struck a tree at the tank’s valve.
Homes were evacuated in an area that included Banker Street, Rommel Road, Chapin Lake Road and Perrin Road.
Tri-Township fire chief Max Kulpinski said a large white cloud of liquid propane was visible momentarily.
Firefighters and local residents were able to pull the tank away from the tree and close the valve.
Emergency personnel cleared the area and residents were allowed back into their homes by 4:30 a.m. Monday.
