Sturgis “Bucket Challenge” raises money for United Way

More than $16,000 was collected during last week’s “Bucket Challenge” competition between the Sturgis Fire Department and Sturgis’ Electric Department.
Staged Friday outside the Sturgis Fire Department, the two departments conducted the fundraiser for the benefit of the St. Joseph County United Way. Beginning at 9 a.m., the competition saw city employees spend 30 minutes in either an electric truck bucket or in the fire department’s ladder-truck bucket. They then solicited pledges from high above the city.
In addition the United Way received a donation of $4,000 from Greg Persing to be used for the K-9 fund.
Because they lost to the fire department, Electric Department members spent a portion of the day Monday washing fire trucks.
