Sturgis’ West South Street selected for rehab

West South Street, from South Centerville Road to east of the railroad tracks, was identified in Sturgis’ 10-year street-improvement program and has been selected for significant rehabilitation.
City commissioners last week approved the task order with Fleis and Vandenbrink Engineering, Inc. for preliminary design, final design and bidding services for $48,000.
Construction for West South Street will be partially funded by a grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation.
A grant application for $375,000 was submitted through a MDOT economic development grant program to improve access for all seasonal capabilities on routes with high commercial traffic.
Although the grant has not been received, commissioners felt it is necessary to begin design at this time.
The project will be designed as a full-depth mill and resurface project. It requires significant storm sewer improvements, as well as new curb and gutter, sanitary sewer line replacement, and water main replacement.
