Hazel Idell (Atwater) Currier passed away at Miller’s Merry Manor in Wakarusa, Ind., on Nov. 25, 2014, after a brief illness. A memorial service will take place this summer.
Hazel was the second daughter of Grace and Duane Atwater. She spent most of her life near the Michigan-Indiana border. She grew up on a farm in White Pigeon, where she learned the skills required to bake a mean mulberry pie and keep the family warm in hand-knit items. Hazel was the type of person who was always there with a helping hand and she instilled in her children the importance of hard, uncompromising work.
In her youth, Hazel had bright red, curly hair and the beautiful smile of Loretta Young. She attended business school for three years in Elkhart, Ind. In 1940, she married Harvey Currier in Goshen, Ind. Together, they raised a family of four in Sturgis, where she also worked as a bookkeeper for several car dealerships and Sturgis Iron and Metal. She loved sewing, gardening, cooking, playing the piano and organ, and especially loved bookkeeping and numbers. Harvey and Hazel retired to Arizona in 1984, where they stayed until Harvey’s death in 1992.
Hazel lived a long, full life, raising four sons, Jim, Rick, Jeff and Bill, and was grandmother to nine and great-grandmother to 15. Hazel’s presence will be missed, but the influence of her character will live on in those who knew and loved her.
Arrangements are being handled by Farrand Funeral Home of White Pigeon.
