Two downtown Sturgis properties will install new outdoor signs after the Sturgis Planning Commission voted to allow the placards to be more colorful than historic standards allow.
Sign designs proposed by West Chicago Road businesses Gina’s Healing Hands Day Spa and the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce had included more than the three building colors allowed in the central business district.
The color restrictions are part of the downtown district’s dedication to maintaining its historic design nature.
Those rules say building exteriors may incorporate no more than three different colors – excluding natural masonry hues – in their exterior designs without city approval.
Planning commissioners agreed with the city’s Design Review Committee that both of the proposed four-color signs are appropriate and approved the designs for installation.
