The largest school district in the county is considering raising its pay rate for substitute teachers.
Meanwhile, Three Rivers Community Schools has already taken that step by approving the first pay increase in 14 years for its substitute teachers following action last week.
District officials in Sturgis said a shortage of subs this school year has promoted a look at increasing the pay rate from what has been $80 daily since 2000. Three Rivers school officials last week, facing similar shortage of subs as Sturgis, agreed to raise the daily rate to $85.
What had been $80 a day countywide has been in place through a so-called gentleman’s agreement with the Intermediate School District.
