January is Radon Action Month

The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Health Agency has issued a media release regarding January as Radon Action Month.
Radon is an odorless, tasteless, radioactive gas that naturally occurs in soil and rock. The agency wishes to remind residents that January is a good month to test for Radon.
Radon typically travels into the atmosphere and causes no damage. Sometimes, however, it gets trapped in homes, coming in through cracks and leaks.
Over time, inhaling Radon can lead to lung cancer. According to the Surgeon General, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
Radon testing kits are available free of charge at the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency.
To pick up a testing kit and for more information on Radon, the agency’s website can be viewed at bhsj.org.
Kits are also available at the agency’s St. Joseph County office, located at 1110 Hill St., Three Rivers.
