The St. Joseph County Transportation Authority has saved more than $5,000 a month the past two months as the result of low gas prices.
CTA director Steve Yorks said the agency’s monthly fuel bills are typically about $25,000. In November it spent about $19,000 on gas, while its December fuel expense was about $18,000.
Yorks said neither he nor anybody on his board had any way of predicting the nosedive when the agency’s 2014-15 fiscal year budget was settled in March 2013.
The CTA has a fleet of 26 vehicles; 21 are 87-octane, gasoline-powered, while the rest run on diesel fuel.
He said the savings help the balance in the agency’s general fund.
CTA vehicles fuel up at the Admiral station in Three Rivers and Murphy Oil in Sturgis, Yorks said.
