A woman who promoted herself in the Kalamazoo areas as “No. 1 Tax Lady” is in hot water with the Internal Revenue Service.
Fontrise Charles is charged with filing false returns for others to ensure big refunds over a three-year period. The indictment also accuses her of filing her own false returns.
The 39-year-old Charles appeared Monday in Grand Rapids federal court and was released on bond. Defense attorney Leslie Posner says she’s looking at evidence shared by the government.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Charles prepared 480 tax returns, resulting in improper refunds of roughly $2 million.
Posner says she’s trying to learn more. She says Charles now works as a nail technician in Muskegon. (AP)
