Investigators from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department have identified the driver and vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident over the weekend.
Sheriff Joe Underwood said evidence and witness statements have helped with the investigation into the death of 25-year-old Duke Gowens of Cassopolis. He was struck by a northbound car at 1:20 a.m. Sunday on M-40, north of Withers Street, in Newberg Township.
The name of the driver involved and a vehicle description were not released by officials, as the incident is still under investigation.
Underwood did say, however, that it appears Gowens was sitting in the roadway when the driver in question was unable to stop or avoid a collision.
He said no further information will be released until the investigation is completed and reviewed by the prosecutor’s office.
