Mary E. VanVorst, age 91, of Colon, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
Mary was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Glasgow, Ky., a daughter to the late Elmer & Ona ( Boone) Mosby.
On Sept. 12, 1941, she married Leslie F. VanVorst in Centreville. He preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 1974.
Mary’s early life was spent in Kentucky, she later lived in the Sherwood and Colon area. She had worked hard from an early age, starting out on a farm near Vicksburg, she later worked on her family farm with her husband, where she made Sunday dinners, which included all family members, and worked hard to keep an immaculate home, the family never went without even with their large family. She later worked at Maxitrol in Colon for 11 years.
Left to cherish her memory are five children, Beverly ( Walter) Fenwick of Three Rivers, Dale E. ( Laurie) VanVorst of Ionia, Cheryl VanVorst of Mendon, Steve F. VanVorst of Colon, and Vickie ( Kenneth) Littlejohn of Union City; 19 grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Gary, Michael and Leslie Jr. ( Jake) VanVorst; one brother; and two sisters The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, from 2- 5 p. m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Mary E. VanVorst will be Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 11 a. m. from the funeral home with David J. Farrell officiating. Cremation will follow, and private burial of ashes will take place at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery in Colon.
