Nan Schmitz, 73

Nan Marie (Custard) Schmitz, age 73, of Mendon, died Monday, April 27, 2015 at her home following a long illness. She was born in Three Rivers, MI on June 4, 1941 the daughter of the late Donald and June (Happel) Custard and was a lifetime resident of Mendon. She graduated Mendon High School with the class of 1960. Nan worked at Denton Mills in Centreville and at G-W Pizza in Mendon. Later she was a secretary at Mendon Elementary School and an administrative assistant for Mendon Township. She was a 4-H leader teaching knitting for 13 years and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 154 of Mendon. Nan was married to Charles Schmitz on June 11, 1977 in Mendon. He died on July 5, 2010.

Nan is survived by her daughter, Theresa (Jose) Salinas; granddaughter, Mackenzie Urick; sister Dagne (Bud) Horning all of Mendon; nephew, Ben (Michelle) Horning; great niece, Kenzie Horning; great nephew, Brady Horning all of Vicksburg.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday April 30, 2015 at the Mendon United Methodist Church. Eastern Star services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church followed by funeral services officiated by Pastor Rob Nystrom. Following a luncheon at the church, burial will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery at 2 p.m.
