Michigan unadjusted joblessness 5.9 percent, up 1.1 points

The state says Michigan’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate rose 1.1 points to 5.9 percent in May as a large number of people entered the workforce for the summer.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget released state and regional employment figures Thursday. The statewide rate is down 1.6 points from 7.5 percent in May 2014.

The department says the jobless rate rose in 16 of the state’s major labor markets. It says May’s regional unemployment rates ranged from 4.2 percent in the Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids areas to 7.4 percent in the northeastern Lower Peninsula.

It says the jobless rate in populous metropolitan Detroit rose 1.5 points in May to 6.6 percent. That’s down 2 points from 8.6 percent a year earlier.  (AP)
