Irene “Susie” McDowell, age 82, of Vicksburg, died Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on Jan. 6, 1933 the daughter of Robert and Effie(Shelton) Whaley. She was married to Albert McDowell on Nov. 17, 1951 in Tyronza, Arkansas and they have lived in Vicksburg since 1957. Susie provided cleaning services to the Lakeshore Lanes bowling alley for 16 years, and for the Vicksburg Post Office from 1965 to 1998. She enjoyed restoring furniture, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Susie is survived by her husband, Albert McDowell; three sons, Ronnie (Deborah) McDowell of Union City, Eldon McDowell of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Darrell (Tammy) McDowell of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wayford Whaley, John “Jinks” Whaley, and Charles Whaley; many nieces, nephews, and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents; and by ten brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Eickhoff Farrand Halverson Chapel, 305 Rock River Ave., Three Rivers, MI 49093. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday June 20, 2015 at the funeral home with Rev. Bruce Primm, Pastor of the Community of Christ, Jonesboro, Arkansas officiating. Burial will be in Vicksburg Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to either the American Heart Association, or to Susan G. Komen For The Cure.
