About 25 kids who are part of the Three Rivers Area Mentoring program participated in Saturday’s “Reeling in the Future” fishing event on Corey Lake.
The ninth annual event allowed participants to spend the morning with volunteers who offered their time, watercraft and fishing expertise. TRAM executive director Bobbi Schoon said for many of the participating kids, the experience was their first time fishing from a boat instead of from shore.
The program featured an autograph session by professional fisherman Mark Zona, food and drink supplied by several sponsors, and the generosity of the nearby Happy Landing Café, where the large group sought shelter when a late-morning thunderstorm passed through the area.
First-place winners were Alex Kelley-Martinez with a three-pound catch and Shelbe Bruystens, whose catch weighed in a 1 pound, 9 ounces. They will be treated to a day of fishing on Lake Erie with pro fisherman Scott Koenigsfeld, who was instrumental in starting “Reeling in the Future” and was a part of Saturday’s program.
