The Colon Area Chamber of Commerce has announced its 2015 Citizens of the Year are Joseph and Paige Smolarz.
During their 25 years in Colon they have become deeply entrenched in the Colon community and extremely active in school and community events.
Village trustee Edith Doenges said Joe is an avid supporter of the village’s police and fire departments, allowing their members to conduct training on his property and sometimes helps with the funding to get needed equipment.
He was responsible for the complete renovation of the high school athletic field locker rooms. Doenges said he also donates his skill as a dentist by giving dental exams to children at Colon Elementary school.
Paige Smolarz is involved in school activities, substitutes periodically and manages the Magi Café at the football field, including shopping for and delivering the food.
She coaches the boys track team, is always at the scorer’s table at basketball games, and has never missed a game, home or away.
The couple will be recognized as grand marshals of Saturday’s Fourth of July parade in downtown Colon.
