Colon Schools passes on ice and water dispenser

Members of Colon Community Schools Board of Education recently took a pass on the idea of buying an ice and water dispenser as an income-generating concept.
During discussion of the issue at their June school board meeting, district officials agreed that under different circumstances and in more prosperous times, the proposal might receive more serious consideration.
Board members agreed that making the purchase now would be hard to justify in light of teacher and staff layoffs the district has had to administer in advance of the 2015-16 academic year.
Colon businessman Arden Davidson in May provided details about the $85,000 machine, sold under the trade name Kooler Ice. He said an ideal location has been eyed on property the district owns near the Palmer Lake Dam.
Board members said in addition to the expense, the idea would possibly take away business from Colon stores that already sell ice.
