Here’s a reminder that the St. Joseph County Conservation District has canceled its river cleanup that was to take place Saturday.
Jeff Pant, who scouts the waterways ahead of the cleanups, said the stretch of the Pigeon River originally targeted for Saturday is moving at a rapid pace and could pose a threat to inexperienced paddlers.
The event was to be the fifth of seven river cleanups staged by the Centreville-based agency this summer. It was scheduled to start at the Thomas Road bridge in Mottville Township and conclude at M-103.
The final two cleanups remain a go, Pant said. A stretch of the Portage River in Lockport Township Aug. 22 and a portion of the St. Joseph River in Mendon Township and the village of Mendon is planned for Sept. 12.
