85-year-old man dies in fall from zip line

An 85-year-old man died after plunging 25 feet to the ground from a zip line at a camp in Michigan’s Thumb region, and his wife saw it all happen.

James J. McNeil fell from the zip line Thursday at Bay Shore Camp in Huron County, about 95 miles north of Detroit. Sheriff Kelly Hanson says McNeil, of Belmont near Grand Rapids, never regained consciousness.

Hanson says the investigation is focused on a harness mechanism that hooked McNeil to the line. He says the camp employee who was working the zip line is certified and trained.

The sheriff says McNeil’s death appears to be an accident. His wife and others were witnesses.

Bay Shore Camp is a Christian camp that offers youth activities as well as adult retreats and events.  (AP)
