Commission agrees to purchase land for park

St. Joseph County county’s parks system is about to add an unprecedentedly scenic property to its portfolio.
Members of the county commission Tuesday agreed to the $330,000 purchase of a six-acre parcel that includes 1,000 feet of shoreline in Lockport Township.
The parcel is north of the Langley Covered Bridge and on the east side of Covered Bridge Road.
Parks and Recreation Department director Jaymes MacDonald said the parcel affords a stunning view of the Langley Covered Bridge.
MacDonald said he envisions development that, much like Rawson’s King Mill Park in Leonidas Township, will make the newest park an ideal wedding location. Other potential development would ideally include at least a river walk and boat launch, he added.
The county expects to close on the property later in the fall.
