Richard Meyer, 87

Richard William Meyer, age 87, of Mendon Township, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015 at his home. He was born near Vicksburg on June 24, 1928 the son of John M. and Pearl M. (Woods) Meyer and was lifetime resident of the area. Richard attended the Strong Country School graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan. He worked briefly for Grand Trunk Railroad, and retired from Post Cereals in Battle Creek after 34 years of service.

Richard was a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans and Hice-Shutes American Legion Post #170. He was an active member of Free and Accepted Mason Chapter 137 in Mendon where he served as Past Master. Richard enjoyed working on and around the home he built near Portage Lake. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, Tiger Baseball, and Mendon Football. He especially loved time spent with his grandchildren.

Richard was married to Betty R. Smyers on Oct. 6, 1951 in Lewistown, PA. She survives along with two children, Karen (Mike) Lance of Three Rivers and Robert (Lori) Meyer of Mendon; four grandchildren, Matt Barth and Chris Barth, Ashley (Justin) Stephenson, and Gary (Andrea) Meyer; two great grandchildren, Braxon and Mason; and William Ash Meyer on the way; brother, Melvin (Ginny Kinch) Meyer of Baldwin; sister, Georgene (Ed) McKenzie of Sun City, AZ; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, M. Irene Butler.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14th at the West Mendon United Methodist Church, 22994 Portage Lake Rd., Mendon, MI 49072. A Masonic Rite will be conducted at the church beginning at 7 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with Pastor Thoreau May and Rev. Bob Barton officiating. Interment will follow in Mendon Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to either the West Mendon United Methodist Church, to Mendon Masonic Lodge 137, or to Disabled American Veterans Buck Crosby Chapter 6.
