Michigan hunter faces pretrial in slaying of mother bear

A 27-year-old western Michigan hunter has been formally charged in the death of a mother bear that was with her cubs.

Derek Hassevoort of Zeeland waived a October 14th arraignment and faces a Nov. 3 pretrial hearing in Oceana County District Court.

He was named about two weeks ago in a warrant.

Hassevoort is charged with unlawfully taking a bear, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail, a fine, restitution and possible loss of state hunting licenses for the next three years.

A compound bow was used to shoot the black bear Sept. 23 northwest of Grand Rapids in Colfax Township. It’s illegal to shoot a mother bear that’s with her cubs.

Hassevoort is free on bond.  (AP)
