The village of Colon’s computer system was hacked at some point in the early morning hours Wednesday last week.
Village president Tom Tenney said no personal information was compromised.
Tenney said the email looked authentic and it indicated it was from the village of Colon. Tenney said when the email is opened, what looks to be the homepage for Google appears, and a username and password were requested in order to open the alleged message.
Tenney said he was a victim a few weeks ago when he opened an email from a local real estate agent and signed in to the fake Google homepage. Tenney said it’s his understanding that whoever is behind the activity appears to be interested in accessing email accounts.
He said the village worked with its server and got the problem resolved in relatively short order.
