Helen A. Butler, age 91, of Mendon, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015 at Riverview Manor in Three Rivers. She was born near Mendon on Sep. 21, 1924 the daughter of Claude L. and Katie R. (Winkleplek) Harriger and was a lifetime resident of Mendon. Helen graduated from Mendon High School with the class of 1943. She was married to Carl W. Butler on July 14, 1945 in Paw Paw. She was a clerk at the Mendon Post Office for 29 years. She then worked at Eickhoff Hardware and later for Hager Supply in downtown Mendon, and worked briefly at Mendon Schools following her retirement.
Helen attended the Mendon United Methodist Church, and was a Gold Star Mother. She enjoyed ceramics and adding to her angel collection. She also enjoyed playing solitaire, word-search puzzles, bowling, and for several years sang in the Mendon Kiwanis Showboat.
Helen is survived by a son, Douglas (Ann) Butler; two grandchildren, Steve (Amy) Butler and Shannon Butler; four great-grandchildren, A.J. Butler, Abby Butler, Ally Butler, and Savanna Butler all of Mendon; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; a son, PFC Dennis Butler; brother, Forrest Harriger; and sister, Louise Copenhafer.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 PM Sunday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. Funeral services will be at 1 PM Monday, Jan. 4, 2016 at the funeral home with Rev. Thoreau May officiating. Burial will be in Mendon Cemetery. Memorials will be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
