White Pigeon home damaged in fire

Smoke detectors were credited for alerting a family that a fire had started in their home early Monday in White Pigeon Township.
Firefighters were called to the 68000 block of Sevison Road around 1:30 a.m. They arrived to find smoke coming from the eves and a small fire near the front door.
Three occupants, a husband, wife and 6-month-old child, were able to escape through a bedroom window.
Authorities said the husband opened the bedroom door, saw flames and thought he could extinguish it, but the fire grew too fast. He closed the door and the family escaped, fire officials said.
Firefighters used a thermal camera to locate hot spots where the fire was pulled through the cold-air return on the furnace. Fire spread into insulation in the attack, damaging some rafters.
Cause of the fire has not been determined.
