Representatives from Glen Oaks Community College and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department conducted an emergency-preparedness drill Tuesday.
School officials said the drill was staged to provide college employees, and local and state police agencies a chance to practice responding to an active shooter incident on campus.
Participants from public-safety and medical-response agencies in the county also had a role in the mock event.
T.J. Baker, director of emergency services for St. Joseph County, said the event marks the first time an active-shooter drill has been conducted on the Glen Oaks campus.
Baker said event organizers purposely selected a day when there were no classes and by doing so, it allowed everyone to better focus on their roles.
