Cold across Michigan prompts warnings; crashes reported

Bitterly cold weather has made its way into Michigan and wintry conditions are creating hazardous driving conditions in parts of the state.

The National Weather Service issued wind chill advisories into the weekend, with temperatures forecast to drop below zero at times.

The Van Buren County sheriff’s department reports numerous crashes Friday along a stretch of I-94 in southwestern Michigan.

A stretch of the freeway was temporarily closed after the crashes, which included a tractor-trailer that spilled about 2,500 gallons of oil. Police reported four people had minor injuries in the crashes.

In western Michigan, including Holland and South Haven, a winter storm warning is in effect until Saturday afternoon. Whiteout conditions are possible as winds kick up and 6 to 10 inches of snow is predicted.  (AP)
