Faulty valve causes overflow

Three Rivers Wastewater Treatment Plant personnel discovered a faulty air-release valve at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday on South US-131.
The malfunctioning piece of equipment had caused a sanitary sewage overflow onto the adjacent roadway.
Wastewater personnel isolated the malfunctioning valve, and a clean-up contractor vacuumed and power-washed the affected area. Clean-up personnel covered the affected area with hydrated lime as an additional safety measure.
All clean-up debris was properly managed at the treatment plant. No surface waters were impacted as a result of the incident.
The required notifications to Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph County Health Department were made.
