Sturgis city commissioners last week reviewed a proposal for a $200,000 expansion at the Doyle Community Center.
If approved, the additional funds would provide dedicated space for strength and cardio-training equipment, and open the possibility for future 24-hour access to the health site.
On the table is a proposed 45- by 60-foot expansion to the northeast corner of the building, putting all strength- and circuit-training equipment in a single room.
Several city commissioners said they’re concerned that Doyle proposes spending for a new project without including plans to address some maintenance issues, such as the existing track surface, the roof, and heating and air conditioning repairs.
Currently, some of that new equipment is located on one of the Doyle’s tennis courts and previously was set up on a racquetball court. Officials said the popularity of the new equipment and increased demand for court time is prompting the expansion proposal.
