Connie Smith, 84

Connie A. Smith, age 84, of Colon, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016, peacefully at home with her family.
Connie was born Sept. 10, 1931, in Charlotte, Mich., a daughter to the late Gaylord L. and Ruth A. (Hooper) Sherman.
Connie graduated from Olivet High School and continued her education at Mercy College of Nursing in Detroit, receiving her registered nurse degree.
On July 3, 1954, she married Dr. Robert D. Smith in Olivet, Mich., and he preceded her in death Nov. 7, 2006.
She moved to Colon in 1954, and had worked at Leila Post Hospital in Battle Creek and also in her husband’s doctor’s office, in Colon.
Connie was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Colon, Colon Red Hatters Club, Peacemakers Quilting Club, and a past member of the Colon Garden Club, and had served on the Colon School Board and was a past Colon Twp. Treasurer.
She is survived by her daughter Ruth Ann (Kurt) Kuhlmann of Colon; son, Thomas (Denise) Smith of Sherwood; grandchildren; Erin (Gabe) Corey, James Smith and fiancé Hannah, Scott (Beth) Keller, Travis (Tracy) Kuhlmann, Amber (Matt) Noorman, and McKenna Kuhlmann; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Richard) Parr of Charlotte; sister-in law, Shirley Sherman of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death byone brother Gary Sherman.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Connie A. Smith will be Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 484 S. Burr Oak Road, Colon, MI 49040, with Pastor David Grimm officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Colon.
If desired the family suggests memorials be made in memory of Connie to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
