Sturgis city commissioners last week said they want to study the potential development of a municipal dog park.
Commissioners said they have received multiple inquiries from constituents about a dog park, and city manager Mike Hughes said that and development of recreation trails are among the community’s top priorities, after a recent review of the city’s master recreation plan.
Commissioner Jon Good suggested tasking the city’s Parks and Recreation Board with spearheading a review of potential sites, types of facilities to include, use rules and fundraising with the help of people who have expressed an interest in participating. Commissioner Charles Huber volunteered to represent the city commission on the study board.
No timetable was set for completion of the study and no deadline was discussed for submitting recommendations to the commission for final action.
The city of Three Rivers recently agreed to look into a dog park of its own.
