A Delton man wanted on a warrant from Kalamazoo County faces additional charges after he attempted to flee from a Schoolcraft officer this week.
Chief Bryan Campbell said a patrol sergeant conducted a traffic stop at 4 p.m. Tuesday on West VW Avenue, near 16th Street, after the driver was observed speeding in the village.
During the course of the traffic stop, the officer discovered that the driver had an outstanding warrant for operating while intoxicated.
The 19-year-old suspect complied with the officer to exit his vehicle. As the sergeant began to handcuff the suspect, the man pulled away and tried to escape.
The two went to the ground, where the man continued to fight. A passing bicyclist began to assist the officer; a second citizen in a vehicle stopped and called 911.
A Vicksburg officer arrived on the scene, and the man was controlled and taken into custody.
There were no injuries as a result of the scuffle.
Campbell said he and the department are grateful for the assistance of private citizens who saw the officer in trouble and came to his aid.
